Example of impact Marge Randlett, Kuspuk School District Technology Director, 9/7/2005.The E-Rate program has had a great impact on education delivery in our remote, rural Alaskan district. At this very moment, an Algebra 1 course is being offered to 24 students from a highly qualified teacher via in-district video teleconference. A few minutes ago, an Aviation ground school course was being offered to 10 students in two villages over video teleconference. This afternoon, we have our first HSGQE Examination preparation course after school via video teleconference. Guidance counseling services will be offered this year to 150 students through video teleconference.Internet-based courses have also been a success, with several students per semester coñenrolling in college courses via distance delivery. This year, we will provide professional development to 100% of our teaching staff via video teleconferencing. Internet resources are critical for our teachers, especially in our small K-12 where textbook resources are sometimes inadequate or missing. Students regularly use the Internet for many, many different resources, including up-to-date information for their daily class work. Our digital resources and curricula can be shared among the 430 students in our 8 villages via the infrastructure subsidized by E-Rate. The electronic math program for 26 students is accessed through a remote server, as is the database for keeping detailed records regarding student progress on State standards. All of the items above were ONLY achievable through the E-Rate program. Without it, we would have very, very limited Internet access, and only for data-critical personnel. Without video teleconferencing, how could we even begin to address many of NCLB demands, especially the need for highly qualified teachers in our tiny K-12 schools with only one or two teachers? There are no roads in our area. Our eight villages are connected only by the river. Airfare is extremely expensive. Broadband service and concomitant infrastructure has been extremely important to the education delivery in our district. It's a \"must\", but we could not continue our current level of service without the E-Rate program.
